Faith Chest

Bryce accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at church camp this summer on July 23, 2012.  I have this date marked in my calendar and plan to celebrate this date each year with him.  This is so exciting!!!

Bryce then watched a baptism in August and in doing so, asked many questions.  I had told him that our next baptism at Emmanuel would be in November and he immediately said that he wanted to be apart of that.  A baptism was indeed planned for November and it was the first one designed specifically for elementary aged children.  It was truly a day of celebration!!!  His testimony was beautiful... he talked about his conversion at camp and that he believed Jesus died on the cross to wash away his sin.  He then stated that he wanted to be baptized to share with everyone that he is a disciple.

We gave Bryce his gift after the baptism.  He unwrapped his "Faith Chest" with a new youth Bible inside.
The Faith Chest will provide a place to keep mementos, photos, and symbols of Bryce's faith journey.
Items that we have already added to the chest are...

*Baby Dedication Certificate and pictures
*Baby Dedication blanket
*His First Bible
*Letter from his Church Camp Counselor, letters that Bryce received from family members in the mail while at camp, and camp photos
*Devotion Booklet that was created specifically for Bryce for our mission trip to Nicaragua... thank you Becky Cates!!!!
Bryce's devotion booklet is the red one in the center.
*Baptism Certificate
*Baptism Blessing Cards - I created Baptism Bags for each child that was baptized.  They were on the stage and Blessing Cards were passed out to all the guests.  They were encouraged to write a prayer, scripture, or special blessing to each child that he/she knew being baptized that day.  Bryce received several Blessing Cards from family, friends, and Sunday School teachers.  These cards are so meaningful!

I know that there will be days that Bryce's faith will be tested.  There will be storms in his life... it is inevitable.  I pray that during difficult seasons, Bryce will pull out his chest that documents his faith, and be comforted with the evidence of God's unfailing love.

Nicaragua Journal Entry Day #5... El Porvenir

Encouragement note for today...
Give it all you've got!
Keep Calm and Pray On!  1 Thessalonians 5:17

We worked on the opposite side of the dump today.  As we arrived, the 15 yr. old mother and her husband from yesterday, were digging in the dump for things to be used in their home. They had a plastic bag full of things.  My heart ached watching these "kids" trying to survive.  I started the morning with a heavy heart but with the intent to give it all that I had and for His glory.

We parked the bus and I stepped out, onto the dump.  The smell was atrocious!!!  The smell of burnt rubber was so heavy in the air. We quickly filled our water bottles and began our walk into the community with a saddened spirit...

We each took a fruit tree and broke up into teams again. Today it was us, the Robrock clan, our translator, Guadalupe, and a lady leader from the community joined us.  Our team walked all the way down the dirt path to the last house, starting backwards with the intent to work forward.  My first reactions were that this side of the dump was more well kept than the other side.  I was told that Food for Hungry has partnered longer on this side, evidence that FH is making a difference!

Going to each home was so very special, yet certain homes stuck out to me today.  We went to a home that a young man was working in his "yard."  He had plants and flowers... Bonito!!  He took pride in his home.  He seemed like a gentle man.  As we spoke with him, he thanked us for the tree.  We asked him if we could pray for over him and he excused himself.  He came back with a shirt on... he couldn't pray without showing respect to Him.  Wow... this needy man taught my boys to humble themselves before the Lord, to prepare themselves when they are going to spend time with Him!  My boys shared this story tonight during our devotions... A beautiful and powerful moment.

Our last visit touched my heart deep down!  The lady that had walked with us all morning, was finally able to get her tree planted.  I wish I would have communicated with her more during our morning because at the end of our time, I couldn't get enough of her!!!  She thanked us over and over for coming into her community with love and friendship.  She said my name several times, kissed my cheeks, and with my face in her hands, she said she would never forget my beautiful face.  She wanted prayer for her tree and for herself to bear fruit...
"Remain in me, and I will remain in you.  For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you can not be fruitful apart from me."  John 15:4
I asked this special lady what her name was, Aurora, because she blessed my day so very much!  She had a smile and an obvious love for the Lord and a true gift of leadership.  She is being trained by FH to become a community leader and it was certainly evident.  Jesus was shining His light through her!  I asked if I could take her picture to remember her face for always.  She then asked if I could send her one.  I hope it will get to her, I plan to mail it to Guadalupe.  Thank you dear Jesus for putting this beautiful woman in my path today.

All morning I saw several butterflies flitting around.  As I left Aurora's home, the colorful butterflies comforted my heart with the feeling of God's presence.  I felt Him whisper Hope on my heart for this community.  I was able to leave with a comfort of His power and love which was such a difference from when I arrived this morning.  The butterfly has new meaning to me and my life...

We left that side of the community to head to the feeding station for lunch and VBS.  I got to see and embrace my boy, Wilberth! He was so eagerly awaiting our arrival!  There were many hugs, high-fives, and giggles... a common language for us!  During craft time the kids made prayer bears with cotton stuffing.  They were each given a Bible verse for the day, written in Spanish, to put into the tummy pocket of the bears!

It was the hottest day yet... WOWSERS!!!  A special treat awaited us.  So, it was time to leave. We gathered in our van and Wilberth ran to the other side to continue waving and high-fiving Bryce.  He didn't want us to leave today.  How, oh how, do we say good-bye to this sweet boy tomorrow?!?!

We pulled away and took a small drive. To the surprise of our kids, we arrived at the Pacific Ocean for an afternoon swim!!! Children filled with joy, took off for the BIG waves!!! We had the beach to ourselves. I took some time to take in the moment.  Being in Nicaragua... making a difference in a community... being filled with a FULL heart... looking at the enormous volcano in front of me... and waves behind me with giggles in the air... I am grateful to be here!  Blessed beyond measure...

At devotions tonight, Jairo spoke about the attitude of the Nicaraguan people.  He stated that the people have a "why bother?" attitude.  They're not happy, not even content, but this is how it is, so why bother.  My heart has been on such a rollercoaster today.  Started off very heavy and worked up to joy and hope but now brought back down.  I'm resting on the encouraging words that I started my day with yesterday...

May the God of Hope fill you with all Joy and Peace as you trust in Him.  Romans 15:13

An Upcoming Adventure!

While in Cincy last weekend, I worshipped with my Aunt and Uncle at their church.  I'm certain that it was no coincidence that I was meant to hear that sermon!  It was titled... Adventure!  The sermon took us to an amazing adventure in the Bible with Cornelius and Peter in Acts 10.  Cornelius wasn't a believer in Christ, but he was seeking God and was reverent and generous.  Therefore, God sent Peter to tell Cornelius about Christ.  During this adventure Peter was called to the table with Cornelius.  According to Jewish law, certain foods were forbidden to be eaten.  The food laws made it difficult for Jews to eat with Gentiles without risking defilement.  In fact, the Gentiles were often seen as "unclean."   Peter had a vision that meant he should not look upon the Gentiles as inferior people whom God would not redeem.  Before having the vision, Peter would have thought that a Gentile Roman officer could not accept Christ.  Afterwards he understood that it was his responsibility to go into a Gentile home and tell Cornelius the Good News of salvation in Jesus Christ!

Like any great adventure story, there is always conflict just around the corner.  When Peter brought the news of Cornelius' conversion back to Jerusalem, the disciples were shocked that Peter had eaten with the Gentiles.  Can you imagine the reaction... "What in the world has Peter done now?" "What trouble has Peter generated for us?" "Who does Peter think he is?"  Moving into Acts 11, we see that even the disciples couldn't believe Peter would gather with the Gentiles.  These were people that had walked with Jesus!  However, once Peter began to explain, the Holy Spirit took root.  When they heard his story, they too believed that even those impure, unclean, contaminated people could come to Christ and be saved!

As I thought about my upcoming trip to Nicaragua, these were the words that were pressed on my heart during the message...
Peter's dream was inviting him, challenging him, to be different.  God was asking Peter to move from comfortable to courageous.
When we go out of our comfort zone, it can be exhilarating!  If we are not willing to experience some fear in life, then we won't have the opportunity to feel the exhilaration and joy!
If we always choose to stay in the safety mode in life, we'll never experience what it's like to live an adventure.
We need to be willing to take the seeds that the adventure provides for us and be willing to allow God to use them deep in our hearts to help them begin to grow our character... to change our lives for the better, to look more like Him!
We love adventure stories because an ordinary person is willing to step outside their comfort zones, strap into the ride of his/her life, somehow through all of that, the world becomes a better place!!!

The sermon concluded with these questions...
Who in your world is that unwanted, impure, or unclean person or people group?
Who in your world is God calling you to pray about, to think differently about?
What adventure is God asking you to go on?
Will you step out?
Will you take a risk?
Will you move from your comfort zone to see what God wants to do in your life?

Wow!  The Lord is preparing me to head off to the mission field!  For those of you that don't know, I am co-leading our first FAMILY Missions Team to Nicaragua from August 4-11th.  Braydon and Bryce will be going with me to serve in the community of El Pourvenir, and yes, they were sitting next to me during this sermon!  The exciting part is that we will be meeting our sponsored child, Wilberth!  As the date is nearing, I have many emotions... yet I am so confirmed that I am doing exactly what the Lord has called me to do!

We would greatly appreciate your prayers during our ADVENTURE!  If you are willing, please pray that we would be willing to step out of our comfort zone and into the adventure that He has waiting for us.  That He would plant the Holy Spirit deep into our souls so that we might continue to change and impact this community for the good of Him!  Thank You!!!

We are also seeking financial support to take the three of us out of the country.  If you feel it on your heart to support us, please send donations to...

Reflections from Mother's Day in Kindergarten

I heard Rylan when he was waking up this morning and he was whispering to himself, "It's mommy day, It's mommy day!"  Then, my bedroom door swung open and my sweet little man came running in to announce that it was "Mommy's Day"!!!  He was so keyed up.  He got all dressed up for this special day!  My attire was complete when I put on a beautiful pin that Rylan made me last year in preschool :)
Upon arriving at school this afternoon, the moms were waiting outside the kindergarten room looking at the artwork.  The kids wrote about their moms and drew a picture.  I first looked at the pictures and picked out the one that I thought was Rylan's.  I knew it was his after I started reading!!!  Oh, how this made me smile!
The teacher had the kids come out in the hallway and walk us into the room!  Rylan held my hand and pulled out my chair for me... so sweet!  The kids sang us two Mother's Day songs...
Then, we were invited to enjoy a few snacks.  However, we were to be treated as queens and the children had to serve the mom's.  So, Rylan went off to gather my plate.  Again, so sweet!
While we were finishing up our food that the children had prepared for us, the teacher presented some awards.  Each mom was awarded a beautiful flower pen for what she does the best.  It was our turn... "Rylan's mom is the best at being a church teacher!"  Rylan was grinning from ear to ear... he was so very proud!

To top off the afternoon, we were given a Mother's Day gift... a Kindergarten handprint!  I LOVE this!!!  I made these for my kindergarteners and I was so very pleased to have one for my little man!  I will cherish it always :)
The day together was beautiful!  I awoke this morning with a prayer of great thanksgiving.  A year ago today, I had a sub filling in for me for the Mother's Day tea because I had taken a medical leave just two days prior.  The day after the tea party last year, Bryce was admitted to the hospital and Jeff was gone for six weeks due to business.  One year ago, I was suffering... I was weak... I was broken... Today, I am healed... I am strong... I am full of joy!!!!  The Lord stood by my side and held me up.  It took several months of pain and sadness but I can honestly say, a year later, I am grateful for the journey!  Seeing the big picture now of what God had planned during all of that pain, makes me smile!  I love sharing my testimony... I love where God has lead me... Yes, today was wonderful and beautiful!  I woke up today with a healthy family, a wonderful new career, and a stronger faith... Wow!
If you are struggling today, I pray that you reach for the Lord's hand... he will lead if you surrender.  It may not be the answer that you understand but take his lead, He WILL comfort you, He DOES love you...
Happy Mother's Day to all you wonderful mothers out there!

Faith Date with Rylan!

For Valentine's Day this year, I gave each of my boys a bottle of Crush soda with a coupon attached.

The coupon granted each kiddo a "Faith Date" with mom.

So, considering we are moving into mid April, I decided I better get these dates started!  Yes, no mom award here... 2 months late!!!

Rylan and I went to Ziano's for dinner.  He loves to draw and you can draw on the table cloth there!  Rylan loves fettuccine alfredo and bread... Not to mention, this is my favorite restaurant!!! Yummo :)

While we were waiting for our food, I gave Rylan a gift...
He wasn't expecting a present...
Yay!!!  His very own big boy Bible!!!  AND his name is printed on the front!
He wanted to touch God's words...  He was so very proud of his new Bible :)
Our food was brought to our table.  So, we prayed together, then ate together and talked together...

We talked about me no longer being a teacher and my new role in ministry.  We talked about God, in kindergarten words of course :)  He wanted to know how many more days until church when he could carry his Bible into his classroom.  I told Rylan that I like to write in my Bible and we decided to look up this month's memory verse and underline it.  Wow... thank you Rylan for a perfect date!

... Thanking God tonight for choosing me to be Rylan's mom... Thankful for God's Word, for the stories in the Bible.  I pray that Rylan will begin talking more to God, opening his Bible more, and being "the light" to others...

While we were waiting for our bill.  Rylan wrote on the table cloth and told me to read it.  I did as he asked and then he pointed to me and said, "I love you, mom!"  This was certainly a successful first Faith Date...

Jesus Is My Forever Friend

I have had so many confirmations in the past 4 weeks that I made the right decision by jumping into the world of ministry.  One of those moments clearly stands out in my heart!  This moment needs documented to remember always....

Many of you know my passion for church camp with elementary kiddos.  The number of hearts that are reached and tapped into during one week of camp is simply amazing!  For two summers I have been praying that Braydon's heart would be touched and that he would make a commitment to Christ.  However, both summers, he didn't.  This is a young man that has many questions about faith...he needs understanding...just like his dad!  I knew that many seeds had been planted at camp and that I would continue to sow those seeds.  Yet, I must admit, my heart was feeling defeated.  I know the statistics on ages of kids accepting Christ and we were entering a crucial age...5th grade.  After 5th grade, it becomes that much harder...

So, we leave camp on a Friday night....we continue to talk about camp....we continue to talk about the lessons learned...and on that Saturday night, Braydon asks if he can go to Sonrise Church the next morning.  My first reaction was no, no, no...we need to be attending Emmanuel as a family...this is the church that I had just accepted a position with that week.  His face melted and he walked away.  My heart was heavy for Braydon...so many changes in his life right now.  My emotions were flooding over with finding a way to comfort him.  He really wanted to spend that Sunday morning with his counselors from camp, his friends that he was with, and of course, he wanted to wear his camp shirt to church.  So, I prayed about it and told Braydon that Jeff was going to take him to Sonrise and I would attend Emmanuel with the brothers.  His face lit up..."thanks mom!"

The next morning happened just like we had planned the night before.  We separated and off we went.  Jeff and Braydon got home before us.  As I pulled into the driveway, Braydon was outside waiting for me.  The brothers hopped out of the van and Braydon hopped in.  He immediately says, "Mom, guess what I did today?"  Uhhhh...no idea...what?  "I asked Jesus to be my forever friend at church!"  My head spun around, what?!?!?!?! Then the questions...Did someone pray with you?  Did you tell anyone?  What made you decide to do this?!?!?!?!  He quietly and calmly responded..."I knew that this would be my last Sunday at Sonrise and it is like my home, mom.  I knew that I needed to do this there at the church.  I just prayed to myself and asked Jesus in my heart.  I told someone but I don't think they heard me...mom, I felt so tingly inside...it was good."  Oh my golly, I wanted to run down the street and shout the news to everyone but I wanted him to have that glory and I didn't want to be the crazy mom :)  I hugged on Braydon...told him how proud I was of him...told him that this is just the beginning...so much more to come!!!

We went to lunch together as a family at O'Charley's.  While waiting for our lunch, Braydon says, "mom, tell dad what I did today."  No way!  One of the lessons at camp is that once you make this decision, you are to go and spread the good news!!!  "You tell dad, Braydon!  This is exciting!!!!"  It was cute to listen to Jeff...he asked the same questions as me :)

As I was seeking direction a few weeks before this event, my daily devotional, Jesus Calling by Sarah Young, stated this...

You will never be in control of your life circumstances, but you can relax and trust in My control.  Instead of striving for a predictable, safe lifestyle, seek to know Me in greater depth and breadth.  I long to make your life a glorious adventure, but you must stop clinging to old ways.  I am always doing something new within My beloved ones.  Be on the lookout for all that I have prepared for you.

That night as I sat in prayer for myself...I was thankful...truly thankful!  I realized at that moment that my decision to enter ministry was truly God's path for me AND my family.  Had we remained in our safe and consistent routines, I don't believe that Braydon would have felt the urgency to make this commitment to Christ.

Dear Jesus, thank you for entering my heart and filling me with peace about being separated for one Sunday at church...thank you, Jesus, for entering my sons heart, thank you for Camp Lakewood...thank you for the ministry team at Sonrise that has poured into Braydon...thank you for this amazing opportunity to enter Emmanuel and begin touching more hearts...oh dear Jesus, I am honored to call you my best friend, too! Please remain at the center of our lives...speak to us...guide us...equip us...  I praise your Holy name...amen!

Career Change!!!

"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."  Jeremiah 29:11

It was two years ago this summer, that a dear friend of mine approached me with the words, "you may want to consider where God is calling you..."  I remember giggling and saying, "Ha...I have, He has called me to teaching."  I've wanted to be a teacher ever since I was in first grade!  I've ALWAYS known what my life would look like.  The good Lord must have gotten a good laugh with that one!!! He's been knocking on my door ever since!

In January 2010, the seed that had been planted the summer before, was beginning to take root.  A part time children's ministry position at my church had opened.  I accepted this position and began working on Sunday mornings.  By March I had been offered the possibility of more hours at the church, beginning that summer.  Therefore, I decided to take a half time sabbatical from my teaching position to seek the ministry field.  This past fall, I went part-time, teaching morning kindergarten AND part-time in Children's Ministry at Sonrise.  I was so excited about the opportunities that layahead.  However, last August, my hours at the church were increased from 10 to 25 hours per week.  Although I was technically part-time in two places, I was really doing two full time jobs at one time.  By November, it was obvious to my family that I just simply couldn't keep up with both positions AND maintain being a healthy mom and wife.

My faith muscles were stretched greatly during this season.  I was in deep prayer for several weeks and truly  felt God calling me to ministry.  Although I felt the calling, the peace wasn't evident...the timing just didn't seem right for several reasons.  I began to really struggle though...why would God open this door to close it so quickly?!?!?!?!  My heart was broken when I resigned my position in Children's Ministry at Sonrise in December of 2010.  Many people people had told me that if God was truly calling me to ministry, He would open another door.  So, I began to dive back into teaching and focusing on my health issues.  My God was in control the entire time...why did I doubt Him?????  Sheesh!!!  My great God knew that I needed these past several months to focus on my health concerns and get things under control.  My great God knew that I was going to be taking care of my son whom would be quite sick.  My great God also knew that my husband would be leaving for six weeks and that I just simply would not have been able to hold things together if I would have been working full time then.  Wow...I am the child of a Great God!!!

So, here we are...present day.  A few weeks ago, I receive a surprise email from a friend that his church was in need of a full time Children's Pastor.  My first reaction was nope...I can't open my heart up that way again but as the days went on, the Holy Spirit began working on me again.  There were so many things that were falling in place this time.  I felt that the Lord was just hitting me over the head with a big 2X4 board!!!  The sermon yesterday, "When God calls you to ministry, Just Do It!"  So, I HAVE!!!!  I resigned my teaching position of 15 years this morning.  I feel complete peace with this decision.  I then signed my new employee agreement with Emmanuel Community Church this afternoon in Children's Ministry.  My heart is happy... I'm honored and blessed to be invited to work alongside this team of pastors.

As Jesus was going down the road, he saw Matthew sitting at his tax-collection booth.  "Come, be my disciple." Jesus said to him.  So Matthew got up and followed him.
Matthew 9:9

Just think! Though I did nothing to deserve it, and though I am the least deserving Christian there is, I was chosen for this special joy of telling the Gentiles about the endless treasures available to them in Christ.
Ephesians 3:8

Dear Lord, I'm drawing on Your power and faithfully accepting this special role that You have placed in my path...amen

Reflections of Camp!!!

It is the morning after church camp and my heart is full!  As I am relaxing, yes relaxing on the couch, I am reflecting on my week of camp with 99, 3rd-5th grade campers.  We conquered SO much in the hearts of these children this week.  We had kiddos asking Jesus to be their forever friend by Wednesday!!!  On Friday, I had campers continually coming up to me and sharing the good news that they accepted Jesus in their hearts!  The joy that came from witnessing these testimonies was glorious!!!!

I am on such a spiritual high...the Holy Spirit was truly evident this week!  I am now more passionate than ever to jump into the ministry field...the Lord has placed a calling in my life...I am ready, truly ready...yes, my heart is happy and rejoicing...yes, I declare this morning that I too, recommitted my heart to Jesus this week...not only does He have my heart but I've asked Him to pave the path for me...equip me in the days to come...I LOVE YOU, JESUS!  YOU are MY forever friend!!!

Making Difficult Decisions

Jeff and I have been blessed with a difficult decision.  Yes, you read that right...BLESSED with a Difficult Decision.  This decision has stretched my Trust Muscles and my faith.  It has caused me to jump out of my comfort zone and seek God's will.  This decision has blessed my marriage by providing LOTS of  communication between Jeff and I!  I've treasured our many conversations during the past several weeks.  I have been seeking direction from my husband, my family, and my friends.  Last week at the lake, I sought wisdom from the greatest place possible...the BIBLE!  Here is what I stumbled across when making a difficult decision...

1 Samuel 8:19-22  New Living Translation (NLT)

19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel’s warning. “Even so, we still want a king,” they said. 20 “We want to be like the nations around us. Our king will judge us and lead us into battle.”
21 So Samuel repeated to the Lord what the people had said,   22 and the Lord replied, “Do as they say, and give them a king.” Then Samuel agreed and sent the people home.

Life Application...
Samuel carefully explained all the negative consequences of having a king, but the Israelites refused to listen.  When you have an important decision to make, weight the positives and negatives carefully, considering EVERYONE who might be affected by your choice.  When you want something badly enough, it is difficult to see the potential problems.  But don't discount the negatives.  Unless you have a plan to handle each one, they will cause you great difficulty later.

So, this got me thinking and I created a plan of action for our family decision...I made a list of all the negatives that would affect everyone in our family.  Then, I had Jeff read over the list and he added three additional negatives.  At first the list seemed so overwhelming but we are now working together to complete the action plan.  I can see how the result of this decision could have failed us if we didn't have these solutions in place.  Although this decision will drastically change our family, I feel so much peace that we have prayed and sought out God's Will in this.  I am walking with a pep in my step these days!  Now just waiting on God's timing for this to be all pieced together!

Have you ever had a difficult decision to answer?  I'm certain that this will not be the last time in my life that a decision will be put in front of me.  I'm thankful that I have an action plan in place and actually look forward to the day that God calls upon my heart again.

Our Medical Results

Yesterday was a BIG day in the house of the Hathaway's!  Our morning started off at 2:30am when Bryce woke up and was unable to get back to sleep...he was so nervous.  I finally turned the TV on for him at 4am and I got an additional 30 minutes in before it was time to arise for our day.  Bryce had some preparations that needed done before we left for the hospital.  It is one thing when I am sick but it is another when you are watching your child in tears and discomfort...it was a rough morning indeed.  We arrived at the hospital at 6:30am and everything went quickly and smoothly...we felt ALL the prayers throughout our time in pre-op.  Unfortunately, Bryce inherited my veins and the nurse was unable to get the IV in so they called for the IV team to come and try his other hand.  That was the end of his pain and discomfort!  I prayed with Bryce right before they gave him the laughing gas.  It only took a few minutes and he was truly loopy!!!   Ironically, Bryce was at his happiest moment and this is when I fell apart...seeing him hooked up to so many wires, IV, and laying in the bed, overwhelmed me.  Then, it was time to wait...

The doctor came out 20 minutes later and his first words were, "Everything looks good...Everything is clear!"  Breathe...yes, I took a deep breath and rejoiced!  We sat down and he went over the pictures of his stomach.  He does have Irritable Bowel Syndrome and we are awaiting the results from several biopsies.  He is restricted to a bland diet for the next two weeks with Benefiber and a medication before each meal.  We go back to the gastroenterologist once the results of the biopsies are back....so, we wait again...

Once Bryce was released, we got him home and comfortable and then I headed to my much awaited rheumatology appointment.  I sat down and began explaining my symptoms.  Dr. Reddy's response, "I'm not sure why your doctor sent you to me...a neurologist is a much better fit for your symptoms."  Seriously?!?!?!!?!  I specifically asked my doctor that very question and was told to start with rheumatology.  So again friends, we wait... I am now scheduled to see a neurologist on June 23rd and a rehab doctor on June 27th.  The rheumie doc is recommending an MRI of my brain and back.  Also recommending an EMG of all the nerves in my arms, neck and back (this is a bunch of needles poked into all of my nerves to see where the pain is originating from).  The MRI will be scheduled through the neurologist and the EMG will be done through the rehab doctor.  I am certain that I will be seeing the right doctors this time...I just wish that I wouldn't have needed to waste the last 8 weeks.  Living in the unknown and pain is a bit frustrating.  However, the appointment wasn't a total bust...she did rule out fibromyalgia and believes that I do not have an auto immune disease!  She also diagnosed me with Osteoarthritis in my right knee and possibly the left.  She has given me exercises to begin on my quads for the arthritis.

I am grateful that my thyroid is getting under control and that my energy level rises each day :)  I am thankful that I am entering my last week of school.  I have peace with any diagnosis that is made.  I am filled with hope...believing that when the diagnosis is made, it will just be a matter of physical therapy and medications to get me feeling well.  I have learned patience...at the beginning of this journey, I drove myself crazy trying to take control and now, I am allowing God to navigate this ride!  I am filled with joy today that the sun is shining and my son is smiling!

On my way home from my appointment yesterday this song came on the radio... Let Faith Arise!!!  Powerful and comforting words!!!  Click the YouTube links below...

I Lift My Hands...Behind the Song

I Lift My Hands by Chris Tomlin

Psalm 28
6 Praise the Lord!
For he has heard my cry for mercy.
7 The Lord is my strength and shield.
I trust him with all my heart.
He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy.
I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.

Even During This Storm

I am in the biggest storm of my life right now and yes, I am filled with fear, anxiety, frustration, anger, sadness, pain, and I'm extremely overwhelmed!  However, I Trust In Jesus and because of that I am also filled with joy, love, thankfulness, gratefulness, and even peace...

This two year journey that I've been on has been a rollercoaster of emotions.  Two years ago I began seeking some guidance from my gynecologist.  I had been having many abnormal hormonal symptoms.  He diagnosed me with PCOS, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and referred me to an endocrinologist.  I was elated to know that I was going to get some answers for my chronic fatigue, increase of weight, and various other symptoms.  I did several labs and the endocrinologist told me that everything was normal.  Bottom line...loose weight and loose stress and you will be just fine.  This diagnosis did a number on me.  I began to think that I was lazy and crazy!!!  As the following year continued, I began to get worse.  I was beginning to really fall apart.  I was working full-time, raising three boys that were all in different activities, and we were in the midst of putting my mother in-law in a nursing home.  Last March was, at that time, the biggest storm in our lives.  I made Bryce quit Tae Kwon Do, the first activity that really made him feel proud, and made Braydon quit the swim team, which he had just qualified for the state swim meet.  It was difficult to admit to my family that I just couldn't hang on any longer.  At this time is when my husband began cooking our dinners EVERY night, doing ALL of our laundry, keeping our house picked up daily, completing homework with my boys EVERY night, and putting the kids to bed because I would sleep from the moment I got home from school until about 8pm.  I would very easily then go back to bed around 9:30 or 10pm each night.

I was getting an enormous amount of sleep every day, yet I was completely unfunctionable.  This is when I realized that I could not work full time anymore...during this realization, I was approached about working part time at my church in Children's Ministry.  God is so Good!!!  We didn't feel that I could go completely part time financially but when this position arose...we knew it was an answer to prayer.  I didn't talk much about my sleeping issues with anyone during this time because the doc told me that I was fine...I just thought I was crazy!  I then applied to go part time for the following school year, knowing that I would be working in Children's Ministry at Sonrise for 10 hours a week with most of those hours working from home.

The plan that I had put in place for the fall season had taken a little detour.  Due to some transitions at our church, I was asked to take on more hours and responsibilities in our family ministries.  I had went from 10 hours to 30 hours a week and was no longer working from home.  I was honored and excited about this adventure into ministry!  I had the best of both worlds...teaching little minds every morning and little hearts every Sunday!  However, my body began shutting down again.  I had my next yearly appointment with my gynecologist this past November.  I broke down and told the doctor how incredibly tired I was and nonfunctionable.  She told me that I had too much on my plate once again and that I needed to slow down.

At this time, I began an intense journey of faith.  I met with my principal and pastor to go over what my options were...knowing that I had to give one of these positions up.  I took a weekend to really LISTEN to the Lord and studied his word during a weekend retreat at Camp Lutherhaven.  I left this retreat feeling that God was telling me to walk away and follow him...take the ministry path...He would fulfill our family needs.  I met with my amazing pastor for countless hours...searching and seeking God's will for my calling...is it teaching kindergarten or is it ministry.  I shed many tears...this journey not only stretched my faith muscles but stretched my marriage in every direction!  My husband was not supporting my desire to be in ministry...he really felt that God had created me to be a teacher.  After an amazing sermon toward the end of November, my decision had been made.  I was truly convicted that the timing was not right...I needed to walk away from ministry.  That very weekend, Jeff had made the decision to support whatever I chose...but the sermon spoke to my soul and the timing just wasn't right.  That evening I met with my pastor and resigned my position.  This was SUCH a difficult decision!!!

As of  January 2011, I was back to working part-time but not having the financial supplement from church that I had been receiving.  We weren't prepared for this but knew that it was needed for our family.  Since January, my health continued to get even worse.  I knew that it was time to focus on my health again.  I began waking up in the middle of the night with tingling and numbness in my arms.  I thought that I was sleeping wrong, causing my blood to not flow correctly.  I began to wake up more frequently and my arms would be straight, making me realize that it was not from a lack of blood flow.  Then, the numbness and tingling began in my hands throughout the day, not just at night.  It eventually started hurting my hands so much that I couldn't tie my kindergartners shoes, I couldn't button the buttons on my clothes, and I couldn't pick up heavier objects without dropping them.  I thought that I had carpal tunnel...until the numbness and tingling began in my left foot sometime in March.

At this point I began to research some of my systems...numbness/tingling, chronic fatigue(sleeping every afternoon from 1-3:15 and many times from 5-6:30pm, disorganization, brain pockets (having issues with retrieving the correct vocabulary), muscle/joint pain and other smaller symptoms.  After much research, I was convinced that I had been on the wrong path for two years.  This isn't hormonal...I think that there is something seriously wrong with my body...some type of auto immune disorder.  So, I decided to schedule an appointment with my General Practitioner this time.  I wanted to make sure that I was giving my GP a full picture of my body so I quit taking one of my medications, an anti-inflammatory, that I had been taking for a year, due to plantar fasciitis.  My muscles and joints began to hurt so intensely right before my appointment.  My doctor thought that we would be looking at Fibromyalgia or possibly MS.  He wouldn't send me to a neurologist until all other things were ruled out first.  He sent me off with a list of lab tests to be completed.  I laughed when I looked at the labs because all of the tests were hormonal except for 2 of them...really!?!?!?

These labs were the beginning to my medical mystery.  I got a phone call a week later stating that my labs were very abnormal and that I needed to see an endocrinologist.  Seriously!?!?!?!  I've been down this road, I don't need another doctor to tell me to loose weight and stress and I'll be fine.  My nurse reassured me that this would not happen and that my issues were bigger than my GP.  There was something seriously going on.  When I asked about the auto immune, I was told that one of the two was fine and with all of the hormonal results, we needed to focus on endocrinology first.  I went to a different endocrinologist in April and she diagnosed me with vitamin deficiencies in Vit D & B.  I was also diagnosed with hypothyroidism and she began treating this with medication.  My cortisol and insulin levels were so high that the endo wanted to investigate Cushing's Disease which is a pituitary or adrenal tumor.  I had done a lot of research and was convinced that I had this...Warning - I was doing WAY too much research.  However, working on my computer is the one thing that I can do from my couch!  My body hurt so much at this point that if I wasn't sleeping, I couldn't get up because of my muscle/joint and now extreme back pain!

I did several more labs to rule out or diagnose Cushing's.  The week that this was being done, I also participated in a health fair at my school that was offering some preventative blood draws.  I nearly fell over when I got the results from the health fair.  My C-Reactive Protein was way high.  A normal range is 0-3 and mine was a 39.45.  Yepper, you read that right!!!  This combined with the other inflammatory test done earlier in the month, confirmed that I indeed do have something auto immune going on.  My body is inflammed...yes, I knew that!!!  My endo stated that these results were not in her field and that I needed to see a rheumatologist, these levels indicated Rheumatoid Arthritis, but I needed to get the referral from my GP.  I then took my entire file of all the labs that had been done in the past four weeks and dropped them off to my GP on Good Friday and asked the nurse for my doc to look over the materials and I scheduled an appointment for the following Monday.

I went to my appointment alone...thinking that we would be discussing Rheumatoid Arthritis.  I knew what tests I was going to ask for...I was ready for this appointment...no surprises for me...I've been researching!  Once again, I was shocked with his answer.  He sat me down with a soft, caring, sincere, voice and told me that all of my labs aligned with something called Multiple Myeloma.  He needed to do this test...he was concerned.  Of course, I went home and did research and the information hadn't sunk in yet.  Multiple Myeloma...bone cancer...uncurable...6months to 4 year survival rate...beginning symptom - back pain.  The next morning my mom calls me and I fell apart...I was truly rattled.  My husband had been gone for two weeks due to business and I not only was emotionally strained, but physically I was going downhill.  I went back to the doctor on Tuesday and he suggested a small medical leave until we get a handle on my test results, doctor appointments, and diagnoses.  That was the beginning of my medical leave.

That very evening, Rylan came into my room with a high fever.  He snuggled up with me and I lay there thanking the Lord that I didn't have the added stress of how I was going to get sub plans done for the following morning...I was off of work.  On Wednesday, my first day off, I picked up Bryce from school and he was burning up with fever.  Again, my thankfulness was high!  Bryce had been having bowel problems since spring break but I just assumed that this was a virus since Rylan was sick too.  By that evening his temperature reached 105.  By Friday, he was doubled over in extreme pain.  I took Bryce to the doctor that Friday and he told me that I had one sick little boy.  He thought it was appendicitis.  As he is telling me that I'm not going home but going straight to the hospital...he also looks at my Multiple Myeloma scan....it was NEGATIVE!!!  Praise Jesus!  We discussed the severe back pain that was getting worse daily.  I was in constant pain and my joints were getting worse too.  I had to walk down stairs sideways because of the pain in my knees.  He prescribed an anti-inflammatory and told me that this would not fix my problems but would band-aid my symptoms until we get things figured out.  My doctor told me that I was not well but we had ruled out the worst of the worst and we would keep digging to figure things out but in the meantime, my focus now had to be on Bryce.

My mom went with us to the hospital and after a very long, emotional day, Bryce did not have appendicitis.  However, his labs were abnormal and they wanted to keep him for exploratory tests.  I truly believe that God knew this storm ahead...I was not only on a medical leave for myself but also to care for my son.

I immediately called my husband, who had been gone 3 weeks at this point, and he began his 11 hour drive home.  The pediatric gastroenterologist ruled out appendicitis, bacterial, and Celiac Disease.  We were left with a really nasty virus or Chron's, an auto immune disease.  As the doctor is going over results, I'm baffled at the similarities with my abnormal labs and Bryce's.  What are the chances that we are dealing with the same thing?  Only time will tell at this point!  I am certain that this is not viral for Bryce.  In the past few days, Bryce has gotten worse again.  The mommy instinct in me knows there is something wrong.  I take him to get his blood drawn again tomorrow.  We then will head to the pediatric GI doctor this Thursday.  If there continues to show inflammation, they will schedule an endoscopy.

As for me, I don't know how it happened but the Lord gave me more strength during the first two weeks of my medical leave to care for my son, than I even thought possible.  With the absence of my husband, I was leaning on friends, family and all my prayer warriors and of course, my big God.  We found victory last week when Bryce returned to school on Monday!!!  Not only was Bryce gaining strength but so was I!!!  My thyroid medication had begun to kick in and I'm now only needing to take a nap every few days and I only need about an hour.  My back/ hands and muscles/joints still hurt but it is much more manageable.  I'm beginning to feel somewhat normal!!!  I write this with tears in my eyes...with great thanksgiving!  My children have lost two years of their mommy to a COUCH!!!  I am looking forward to the day when our medical mysteries are solved but until then, each day is getting easier.  I was able to celebrate and rejoice with my youngest son last week on his last day of preschool!  Something that I haven't done in a long time!!!  However, that was more energy than I had attempted in several weeks and I was wiped out.  I slept all afternoon just to be able to take my kids to their school carnival that night.  The rule was, the big boys had to take turns with Rylan because my back and energy simply couldn't keep up with him.  Overall, they picked up the torch with ease and followed through.  I believe that the boys had a fabulous evening but by the end of the evening, I was in great pain...realizing that I had done WAY too much for one day but grateful that I was able to Treasure this Time Together with my children.

My weekend has been spent back on the couch, recouping from Thursday and Friday but it was all worth it!  Writing is such good therapy for me, thus why I started this blog during all of the chaos of the past few weeks AND it is something that i can do from the couch...LOL!  My children, husband, family, and friends have been an amazing blessing throughout all of this and for that I am truly grateful!

As difficult as it was to get up this morning, I knew that the one place I needed to be today was church.  As the worship songs began, I found myself connected to the Lord in a much needed way!  Then the sermon began, "Storm Chasers"...how to deal with the storms in our lives.  I feel like the disciples in Mark 4:37.  I am bailing water to keep afloat.  Yes, I admit, I have had moments during the past six weeks where I thought Jesus was sleeping through all of my troubles.  I was reminded today that I am not alone in this storm if I trust in Jesus!

I go back to school on Tuesday with mixed emotions.  Truly excited to see my kinders!!!...ready for a routine...but scared about the upcoming appointments for Bryce and myself in the next two weeks!  Now that my medications have kicked in, I am certain that I can tackle being up and moving each morning, knowing that I have my afternoons to lay down when needed.  After this morning, I have peace in my heart, joy in my heart, and trust in my heart!  I know that Jesus is with me holding my hand and I trust him.  Dear Jesus, please calm these storms...comfort my son...provide wisdom to our doctors...and be with us always...we NEED you...we TRUST you...we LOVE you...

O LORD God Almighty!  Where is there anyone as mighty as you, LORD?  Faithfulness is your very character.  You are the one who rules the oceans.  When their waves rise in fearful storms, you subdue them.
